The “Erlangen fifth season” begins every year on the Thursday before Whitsun at 5pm on the dot. When the call is issued from the hillside, the citizens of Erlangen and visitors to the town walk via Bayreuther Strasse up to the festival site. People file to the left past pretzel stalls and festival tents either to the entrance or to the Erich- Keller, where the mayor expertly taps the first barrel of beer signifying the start of the festival.
