The history of the Erlangen Bergkirchweih

Back to tour

Germany’s most wonderful beer festival began with the Erlangen city magistrate’s decision to relocate the old town’s Whitsun market to the hunting lodge near the rock cellars of the Burgberg from April 1755. This new site turned out to be as perfect as the timing, coinciding as it did with the traditional Whitsun gathering of local huntsmen, an event that usually drew hoards of people from the town and surrounding area.
