The Former Bayreuth Gate

Back to tour

As the bronze plate at Number 117 Hauptstraße shows, this was previously the site of Erlangen’s most imposing city gate, the Bayreuth Gate. It’s not difficult to imagine just how this narrow gateway must have increasingly hampered the progress of the ponderous horse-drawn carts that shuttled between the town and the Burgberg cellars. This is why it was torn down in 1865.
